To clean your floors the natural way and avoid smearing artificial fragrances, disinfectants, solvents and preservatives all over the floors your kids play on here’s a really simple recipe I’ve been using for a couple of years.
Give floors a quick sweep or vacuum then add 2 tablespoons of liquid castile soap to a bucket of hot water. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oils – for tiled floors I use 5 drops peppermint, 5 drops bergamot and 3 drops tangerine and mop away. Citrus oils are really effective at cutting through grease and grime so you can substitute tangerine for any citrus like lemon, lime, grapefruit or orange. For added peace of mind you can also add tea tree oil or Thieves blend for their antibacterial properties. I always use one of these in my mix on bathroom floors where you need that extra bit of TLC.
If your floors aren’t that dirty and just need a quick freshen up, or if you like to give them a daily mop, you can leave out the castile soap and just use hot water and 5 drops of essential oils. For hardwood floors, vinegar is an excellent cleaner. Add 8floz white vinegar to a bucket of hot water and 5-10 drops of your favourite essential oil. This mix can also be used on tiles too if you just want a one size fits all solution.
No more mucky floors and no synthetic chemicals – win win!
