Podcasts to see you through lockdown & beyond

April 3, 2020

Hey friends,

It’s been a while, and hasn’t the world changed in that period. Overnight, parents the world over became locked down homeschoolers who, despite being isolated from the world outside, suddenly found their personal space more limited than ever before. The irony of craving solitude and silence during this time of isolation is not lost on me!

One of the things I’ve been struggling with most is the constant background noise – I am longing for peace and quiet – time to think, time to just be. But for now my days, hours and minutes are consumed with parenting, cooking endless meals (four people can eat a lot of food when there’s nothing else to do), cleaning (they can also make untold amounts of mess), and teaching/unschooling mostly… Whilst I’ve taken more of a relaxed homeschool vibe, I am still feeling the pressure to come up with activities the children can do to stay occupied. More on this in another post…

During a phone call with my sister this week I explained I didn’t feel I had any space to escape in my head. Our open plan home exacerbates this since we can quickly get on top of one another when forced to stay indoors for 99.9% of the day. She suggested I put my headphones on and take up listening to podcasts. And just like that I became a devotee. Podcasts have given me an escape, stimulation to prevent the boredom and monotony from suffocating me and a means to drown out the stifling background noise. I’ve been listening to them whilst doing chores and when the kids are having ‘quiet’ time or screen time.

I reached out to instagram for some more podcast recommendations yesterday and received some brilliant suggestions so I’m sharing the list here in case you’re also in need of a little noise cancelling escapism during these claustrophobic and unsettling times.

Happy listening and stay safe friends xo
