Early this year I took Ronnie and Trish’s Photo Organisation Course in a bid to get on top of my ever expanding catalogue of photos and give a home to them all. Photos are one area of my life that brought me much anxiety. Many a night I laid awake worrying that I might accidentally delete some or panicking about whether I had fifteen different duplicates of the same image clogging up my hard-drive. I’d gotten myself into such a mess with one huge Lightroom catalogue that blended personal photos as well as all my professional work. The result was literally thousands upon thousands of images all filed in random ways with random names and no sense of consistency or system. I was terrible at archiving and very rarely culled any rejected images leading to a mountain of unwanted photos taking up precious space and slowing my computer right down.
Life Captured’s course felt like someone gently holding my hand and helping me to wade through the mess, slowly picking up the pieces and putting them back together again in a way that reassured me I had safely stowed away my most precious possessions. I learnt so much about Lightroom that I didn’t already know, from how to use metatags, ways to keyword, renaming files, using smart collections to create groups of images from the same category, place or event and so much more. I also worked out a simple and logical way to archive my photos, helping me to preserve my computer’s harddrive memory and enabling me to give a proper home to each and every image. As part of the process I culled a huge backlog of images that I’d felt reluctant to delete before for fear of wiping too many or regretting it later. Somehow the course gave me the confidence and the motivation to work through things that I’d let mount up in the back of a cupboard for way too long.
I’ve kept to my simple system since taking the course and my anxieties have subsided. I can now locate a specific picture from the past at the drop of a hat and I finally feel the daunting task of building our family photo albums and memory books is so much more tangible.
Ronnie and Trish are warm, kind hearted and encouraging teachers and the structure of the course is so beautifully thought through, giving you small doses of information and lots of encouragement and tips so that you can tackle what feels like a mammoth task, head on and in bite size chunks.
Their 6 week online course includes videos, practical exercises, weekly homework, individual feedback and direct emails with your teachers as well as access to a student forum to share and learn from others in your class.
