Before I had children I didn’t give cleaning much thought but after Elsie was born I started to worry about all the toxic chemicals that were in the products I used and whether they might be harmful for our health in the long term.
I quite enjoy cleaning if I keep on top of it, taking the little and often approach to stop things building up and overwhelming me. Living open plan means the kids have access to everywhere all the time so it works for us to have a simple cleaning routine using natural products that actually work.
We’ve been using essential oils to clean our home for a few months now and there really is no going back. Not only do I love the fresh smell they waft about the house on cleaning day but I really value the peace of mind I have from using ingredients rooted in nature. I did quite a bit of research online to find some recipes to replace my everyday cleaning products and I’ve tweaked them over time so they really meet our needs. Cleaning with oils is so much cheaper than buying store bought brands and is just as effective if you have the right tools and finesse the right recipes to meet your needs.
I thought I’d share a few a few of my favourite cleaning recipes with you.
If you’re about to make the move to natural cleaning invest in some great tools. I use a wooden cleaning brush for tiles, bathrooms and sticky patches on floors, various microfibre cloths (these are miracle workers), a simple mop and bucket and a feather duster for dusting.
Wood Spray – we use this on our wooden dining table:
- 4 oz amber spray bottle
- 1 teaspoon Dr Bronners pure unscented castille soap
- 15 drops Lemon Oil
- 10 drops Pine oil
- 5 drops cedarwood or eucalyptus globulus oil
- The rest filled up with water
All Purpose Spray:
- 16 oz Amber spray bottle
- 20ml Dr Bronners pure unscented castille soap
- 15 drops orange oil
- 25 drops lemon oil
- 15 drops thieves oil blend
- 10 drops purification oil blend
- The rest filled with water
You can select any combination of essential oils you like based on smell preference. I love the citrus oils for cleaning and purification as it gets rid of any nasty odours, I also throw in thieves for it’s germ killing qualities. I’ve made one with lavender, lemon and eucalyptus globulus before which is amazing too.
Bathroom cleaner:
- 1 tablespoon of baking soda
- 10 drops lemon oil
- 5 drops orange oil
- Add enough water to make a paste to rub over the bath tub and taps. Use your brushes here to work it in and microfibre clothes to polish up at the end.
