This year I decided to make the kids a simple advent calendar to hang in our kitchen. I wanted to do something a bit different that would add a little festive cheer and feel more personal than a ready made chocolate calendar.
To make it I used 24 business card sized kraft envelopes, and some old rubber number stamps I had tucked away in a drawer. I used red ink to print the numbers on each of the envelopes and then stuffed them with little surprises. I chose stickers, chocolate treats, and little handwritten notes saying things like ‘it’s pancakes for breakfast today’ or ‘tonight is movie night’ or ‘let’s bake Xmas cookies’. I sealed each envelope with some gold washi tape and then fixed small sprigs of greenery to them with copper paperclips which I hung from my herb dryer. I’d already decorated the metal frame with some festive leaves and sprigs to make it feel like a hanging wreath.
The finished result is both satisfying and rather beautiful. And whilst it wasn’t as simple as buying one off the shelf, it was fun to come up with personalised messages and I enjoyed the ritual of making it. This morning it was received with great excitement and there is already speculation about what we’ll find in tomorrow’s little envelope.
The first slither of Christmas has worked it’s way into our home! Happy advent friends… xo
