I get a lot of questions about essential oils and children. Understandably there is an inherent nervousness amongst parents when it comes to trying something new, and if you’ve never used oils before, they can seem confusing and daunting.
We use essential oils every day for one reason or another. After I experienced a period of intense stress and anxiety last summer, I turned to oils looking for something natural to promote my family’s wellbeing. I was astounded by how much they helped me and, slowly but surely, I started to gently introduce them with the children.
I often diffuse oils when they’re worked up or frustrated to help calm and ease them. And if anyone in the family gets sick or run down I use oils to help boost our immune systems and help fight off infections and bugs.
Over time, they’ve become part of the children’s everyday as I wove them into bedtime, taking my time to find which oils had the most benefits for my little ones and creating some simple rituals to incorporate them.
Here are the most common oils I use on the children day to day:
Lavender: It’s the king of oils, especially for families. I make a linen sleep spray out of this oil and spray it on the kid’s pillows in the evening before bed. I also use this in their bath and if they’re not that sleepy at bedtime I’ll diffuse it in their room or rub some mixed with almond oil down their back.
Peace & Calming II: I love this oil and use it on myself daily. It’s got a really soothing scent and calming benefits. It’s great for anxiety, to help ease away the stresses of the day and when I apply it to the kids or diffuse it in the room they become much calmer.
Grounding: A new to me oil as I only ordered this a couple of weeks ago but I’m loving how relaxing it is for me and the kids. I diffuse this or apply to their feet.
Orange: Combined with other oils it’s really great for worked up kids to help them calm down. I diffuse this with peace and calming a lot.
Gentle Baby: The kids absolutely love this oil and asks me to put it on them every night. I put a drop on their forehead at bedtime which helps to promote a sound night’s sleep.
Thieves: The oil for fighting bugs and keeping sickness at bay. It’s antibacterial properties means it literally kills bugs. I diffuse it and apply it to the bottom of their feet. It’s a hot oil which means you have to dilute it with a carrier oil (we use almond) before using topically.
Speaking of dilution, my rule of thumb on using oils with the kids it to always dilute them with a carrier oil, (I often use a roller bottle to mix up dilutions or just do it directly in the palm of my hand), and try a small amount first time on them to see how they respond. All the oils above are safe to use as a dilute either topically (applied to the skin) or aromatically (in a diffuser) with children.
