A portrait of my children, once a week, every week in 2015. Linking up with Jodi for The 52 Project.
Last week the four of us escaped London for the peace and quiet of my mother’s cottage on the coast. It was just what we needed – lots of fresh sea air, hearty autumn meals, simple days spent playing hide and seek in all the knooks and crannies of granny’s cottage and plenty of opportunity to build sandcastles and collect sea shells. What started out as a bit of a frantic week with lots of squabbling seemed to settle down quickly. We noticed a big shift in the number of tantrums and the amount of quarrels – in part, we concluded, due to there being fewer toys to fight over and more opportunity for them to play together using their imagination and what was on offer in the great outdoors. We also introduced a simple star chart to reward good behaviour and so far it’s been a success. Much less screaming, much better listening and more cooperation. Incentives, I find, are always more effective then punishment.
